Prayer Request: A child to choose Godly friendships

Recently, we received a prayer request from someone asking for prayer regarding their child and the friendships they are forming.

As parents, guardians, and loved ones, we know how much influence friends can have in a child’s life. The people they surround themselves with can either draw them closer to God or pull them away from His ways.

The Bible reminds us: “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.” – Proverbs 13:20

Below is a prayer for children to be surrounded by godly friendships. If you are praying for your own child, niece, nephew, or someone close to you, you are welcome to use this prayer as well.

Prayer for Godly Friendships

Abba Father, we come before You with thanksgiving and praise. Lord, we lift up ____ (insert the name of your daughter/son) before You. You are our Father, and therefore You understand the heart of a mother who longs to see her child walk in righteousness.

Father, we speak life over this daughter / son. We speak blessing, purpose, and destiny over him / her. Your Word says that You know the plans You have for him / her, plans for peace and a future filled with hope (Jeremiah 29:11). We decree and declare that he / she will walk in those plans, and that nothing, not even friendships, will pull her away from Your will for his / her life.

Lord, if there is any unhealthy influence over him / her through friendships, we ask that You break that influence now in Jesus’ Name. Your Word says that “evil company corrupts good habits” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Where there is influence that leads him / her down the wrong path, redirect his / her footsteps. For the steps of a righteous person are ordered by the Lord (Psalm 37:23).

If he / she is walking on a path that is not aligned with You because of the voices around him / her, guide him/her back to the path of the righteous. For the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day (Proverbs 4:18).

Lord, we ask that You remove from his / her life anyone You do not want there, anyone sent to distract, deceive, or delay her purpose. Close doors that need to be closed. Guard her heart, for out of it flow the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23).

And Father, in place of what is removed, we ask that You send him / her righteous friendships. Your Word says that “a sweet friendship refreshes the soul” (Proverbs 27:9). Let his / her friendships refresh his / her soul and awaken his / her heart with joy. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). Send him / her friends who will sharpen him / her, and whom he / she can sharpen in return, relationships rooted in truth, honor, and Godly influence.

Give him / her discernment, Lord. Your Word says that if anyone lacks wisdom, let them ask of God (James 1:5). Give him / her clarity of mind to recognize who is for him / her and who is not. Let his / her identity be firmly rooted in Christ, not in peer approval. Remind him / her that he / she is chosen, set apart, and deeply loved (1 Peter 2:9).

Father, as friendships shift and seasons change, guard his / her heart and strengthen him / her. If people are removed from his / her life, give him / her peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7). Let him / her know that even when others come and go, You remain constant and faithful through every season.

We ask all of this not because we deserve it, but because of Your goodness and grace.

In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
