Good Friday: The wounds of Jesus

The Wounds of Jesus

The number 7 holds profound spiritual and biblical significance. The number 7 reflects divine completeness and perfection.

For me, the most significant meaning of 7, is the following.

The Seven Wounds of Yeshua, refer to the injuries Jesus endured during His crucifixion. Each wound holds deep symbolic and spiritual significance:

  1. The Sweat of Jesus: Sweating blood – “And being in anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His  sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.”  (Luke 22:44) – Reshaping our Wills that we would be able to choose to live in obedience to the Father.
  2. The Face of Jesus: Recovering our Identity – “They spat on Him, and took the staff and struck Him on the head again and again.” (Matthew 27:30).  –  Bringing healing from shame and humiliation.
  3. The Back of Jesus: Regaining our Health – “He was beaten so we could be whole.  He was shipped so we could be healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
  4. The Head of Jesus: Reclaiming our Dignity – “They put a purple robe on Him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on Him.” (Mark 15:17).  With the fall of sin, man was was condemned to toil and struggle, and the ground bore thorns and thistles. With the blood that trickled down the face of Jesus, He broke the curse of poverty. “They spat on Him, and took the staff and struck Him on the head again and again.” (Matthew 27:30) – The head is the symbol of authority – the proper authority was restored to man. The head wounds promise healing for every emotional and mental problems, the promise of a sound mind.
  5. The Hands of Jesus – Reestablishing our Productivity – “As He spoke, He showed them the wounds in His hands and His side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!” (John 20:20).  We can now stand righteous before the Father. He blesses the works of our hands.
  6. The Feet of Jesus: Restoring our Authority – “And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church.”  (Ephesians 1:22). This signifies victory over our enemy, trampling the works of the devil. He was bruised for our inequities.
  7. The Side of Jesus: Redeeming our Hearts – “One of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.” (John 19:34). The spear brought forth blood and water.  It pierced the lungs and heart, making mankind new.  The blood is a reminder that Eve was formed from Adam, restoring human relationships and the birthing of the bride of Christ.  The blood flowing from the heart, heals every broken heart, distress and grief.

The Seven Wounds of Christ encompass physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing. They remind us of His immense love and the trans-formative power of His sacrifice. Through His wounds, we find healing, restoration, and eternal life.

Jesus was stripped of His garments, becoming an outcast, despised by all, displaying His complete vulnerability and humiliation. He was stripped from the Father’s Glory, so that our Glory might be restored.

At the Crucifixion, Jesus spoke seven statements in agony from the Cross, signifying completion:

  1. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).
  2. “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).
  3. “Woman, behold, your son!” and “Behold, your mother!” (John 19:26-27).
  4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).
  5. “I thirst” (John 19:28).
  6. “It is finished” (John 19:30).
  7. “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” (Luke 23:46).
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
- Isaiah 53:4 - 6
