Why Should We Pray for the Words Spoken Against Us?
The Bible teaches us that our words hold immense power. Proverbs 18:21 states, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” This verse reminds us of the profound impact our words can have on ourselves and others.
As believers, we have received the Holy Spirit, and through Him, we have authority in Jesus’ name. Luke 10:19 affirms this, saying, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
Our words can either speak life or death into someone’s life or situation. The power of agreement is emphasized in Matthew 18:19: “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” However, this principle works both ways – agreement in negative speech can potentially become a demonic assignment.
It’s crucial to understand that while the devil cannot read our minds or directly curse us, he can plant thoughts that may lead us to curse ourselves or influence others to speak negatively against us. This is why we must be vigilant, as 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 instructs: “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
Given this spiritual reality, it’s essential to pray against negative words spoken over our lives. Here’s an example of such a prayer:
“I rebuke every negative thought, deed, action, or word spoken against me. I declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I proclaim that the fiery arrows will fall flat to the ground! I plead the blood of Jesus over me, my family, and my loved ones, and I ask that You form a hedge of protection around them, protect them by fire and by force. I rebuke, cancel, and destroy every assignment and attack of the enemy, and I cancel every curse or negative word ever spoken over my life. May those words be deemed null and void. I cancel and destroy every plan that the enemy has to use anyone to try and distract my focus from God’s plan and purpose for my life. I declare that God’s plan will be established in my life, and that no one can take away the plans He has for me. As it is written, I declare that I will be the head and not the tail, above and not beneath. I declare that every fight is fixed, and I already have the victory in the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.”
It’s equally important to repent for any negative words we have spoken against others or ourselves. James 3:4-5 compares the tongue to a ship’s rudder: “Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.” This analogy emphasizes how our words, though seemingly small, can steer the course of our lives and the lives of others.
We should pray for the words spoken against us because of the spiritual power they carry. By doing so, we neutralize their potential negative impact and reaffirm our trust in God’s protection and promises. Simultaneously, we must be mindful of our own speech, using our words to bless and encourage rather than to harm or discourage.
