Questions Answered: How Do You Break Ungodly Soul Ties?

At Hope and Healing, we do not only receive prayer requests; we also receive questions from readers seeking biblical guidance on various topics. One question we recently received was how to break what is often referred to as a spiritual husband, counterfeit marriage, and ungodly soul tie.

We value every message we receive and aim to respond with biblical encouragement and practical guidance rooted in Scripture. While believers may hold different views on certain spiritual matters, we believe that freedom, healing, and restoration are found through Jesus Christ.

Below is the guidance we shared in response to this question.

How Do You Break Ungodly Soul Ties?

The Bible teaches that Jesus came to bring freedom to those who are bound, for “if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). When dealing with spiritual oppression, ungodly attachments, or anything that seeks to draw us away from God’s purposes, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, and surrender to Christ remain essential foundations.

We have two prayers on our website that can serve as guidance for what you are experiencing. A “spiritual husband” is often referred to as an incubus or succubus, and you can find a prayer addressing this here.

We also have a prayer for breaking ungodly soul ties here.

These prayers are meant to serve as a guideline, and you can adjust them as you feel led. We encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, for “when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).

The foundation of your prayer can follow this structure:

Begin by coming to the Father with thanksgiving, as it is written: “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise” (Psalm 100:4).

Then move into repentance and renouncing of sins, transgressions, and iniquities, not only your own, but also on behalf of your bloodline. Scripture teaches that iniquity can affect generations (Exodus 20:5), and so we bring these before the Lord in humility, trusting in His mercy.

Ask the Father for forgiveness and cleansing, standing on His promise that “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us… and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Pray that all evidence of these things be removed from your life, and that they be blotted out, as it is written: “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions… and I will not remember your sins” (Isaiah 43:25).

As you pray, renounce and break every ungodly soul tie and any counterfeit covenant in Jesus’ Name, for “the weapons of our warfare are… mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4), and “whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 18:18).

Then, replace what is ungodly by loosing what is from God. For example, where there were ungodly soul ties, ask the Lord for godly relationships and friendships. God’s desire is restoration and wholeness, for “He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:3).

Continue to pray Scripture into your situation. If you are trusting God for freedom, declare His Word: “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Finally, thank the Lord for hearing your prayer, standing in faith, for “this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us” (1 John 5:14).
