South Africa: A Nation Divided or a Nation Destined for Unity?
Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would withdraw aid to South Africa due to the expropriation without compensation law signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. He highlighted the persecution and killing of white South Africans, raising concerns about racial tensions in the country.
But is this truly just a race issue, or is it something deeper?
As a white South African born after apartheid, I find it frustrating when people automatically associate me with a system I had no part in. The growing hostility in the country—where some call for all white South Africans to “go back to where they came from”—ignores the fact that generations of our families have lived here. At the same time, others claim that white South Africans are privileged and control all the wealth, despite the reality that South Africa’s economy is accessible to all.
The problem we face is not just racial division—it is a mindset problem. Many have embraced a victim mentality, believing that they are owed something. But in Christ, we are not victims—we are overcomers. The Bible teaches that God equips those who trust in Him, providing them with wisdom and strategy to thrive.
Consider the story of Gideon in Judges 6–7. When Israel was oppressed by the Midianites, Gideon did not see himself as a leader or warrior. Yet God called him a mighty man of valor and gave him a divine strategy to defeat his enemies with only 300 men. God didn’t remove the enemy instantly—He gave Gideon wisdom and direction.
Likewise, South Africans—regardless of race—must seek God-given strategies to rebuild our nation. Instead of looking to the government or foreign nations for solutions, we need to rely on biblical principles of diligence, stewardship, and unity.
Throughout history, powerful nations have used division to weaken and control others. Some examples include:
- British colonialism: “Divide and rule” was used to deepen ethnic and religious tensions, such as in India and Africa.
- The U.S. and the Middle East: Sectarian violence in Iraq and Libya made it easier for external powers to control resources and influence governments.
- The Soviet Union: Class divisions were exploited to maintain control over Eastern European nations.
- China: Economic and political tactics are used to divide Taiwan and weaken democratic movements in Hong Kong.
Could the same strategy be at play in South Africa? By stirring up racial, economic, and political divisions, those with hidden agendas could weaken our nation and make us dependent on external forces.
If 85.3% of South Africans identify as Christian, then why are we allowing division to rule us? The Bible calls us to unity, not division.
- Psalm 133:1 – “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
- John 17:20-23 – Jesus prayed for His followers to be one, just as He and the Father are one. Our unity reflects God’s glory to the world.
- 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 – The body of Christ is made of many members, each valuable and essential, just as a nation thrives when all its people contribute.
South Africa is known as the Rainbow Nation, yet we are more divided than ever. Instead of focusing on past wounds and differences, we should stand together as one people, under God, working to restore what has been broken.
A nation’s strength is not just in its people but in its leadership. Corruption has crippled our country, with leaders enriching themselves instead of serving the people. The Bible warns against selfish, unrighteous rulers:
- Proverbs 29:2 – “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.”
- Matthew 20:26 – Jesus teaches that true leadership is servanthood, not self-enrichment.
We need leaders who fear God and govern with integrity, realizing that they are accountable to Him.
The Bible never promises that everyone will have the same wealth, but it does promise that those who work diligently and apply God’s principles will prosper. Instead of blaming others or waiting for handouts, we should focus on:
- Hard work and excellence – Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
- Entrepreneurship and creativity – Proverbs 22:29: “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men.”
- Serving others – Luke 6:38: “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over.”
It’s time for South Africans to reject a culture of entitlement and embrace a culture of responsibility, faith, and action.
South Africa is one of the richest nations in natural resources. We have the potential to be an economic powerhouse, but division and corruption are holding us back. We must wake up!
- Stop fighting each other – Recognize that our true enemy is spiritual (Ephesians 6:12).
- Pray for our leaders – 1 Timothy 2:1-2 instructs us to pray for those in authority.
- Seek God’s wisdom for solutions – Just as He gave Gideon a strategy, He can give South Africans strategies to rebuild our economy, communities, and governance.
- Walk in unity – “If a kingdom is divided against itself, it cannot stand” (Mark 3:24).
Now is not the time for race wars or political battles. Now is the time for South Africans—of all backgrounds—to rise as one nation under God and work towards restoration.
Will we allow ourselves to be divided and weakened, or will we stand together, seek God’s wisdom, and rebuild South Africa? The choice is ours.
A prayer for South africa
Abba Father,
We come before You today, lifting up our beautiful Rainbow Nation before Your throne. Lord, You say in Your Word that You appoint the kings and rulers of the earth. Today, we ask that Your Spirit covers South Africa, that You work through this nation for Your glory.
Lord, You are close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and our nation carries deep wounds. We ask that You comfort us where there is pain, heal our divisions, and restore what has been broken.
Father, we ask that You make this nation great—not for our sake, but for Your glory. May we rise above the voices of criticism and destruction. May we stand in unity, governed by Your wisdom and righteousness.
Lord, we ask that the people of South Africa turn back to You, that we may be known as a nation under Yahweh, a people who walk in Your ways. Just as the Canaanites trembled when Israel entered their land (Joshua 2:9-11), let those who seek to harm South Africa recognize that this is a nation protected by the Most High God.
Father, we declare that Your name will be glorified in this land. May Your righteousness, justice, and peace reign in South Africa.
In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
